The Short Cover Letter: 4 Sentences to Get Hired

Recruiters spend 6 seconds on a resume. Your cover letter shouldn't take 6 minutes to read.

Long cover letters are dead. In the age of mobile recruiting and AI filters, brevity is a superpower.

If you are applying to a startup or a tech company, they appreciate efficiency. Here is the 4-sentence formula.

The Formula

  1. The Hook: "I love what you're doing with [Product Feature]."
  2. The Past: "I previously built [Similar Thing] at [Previous Role]."
  3. The Future: "I want to bring that experience to help you solve [Current Problem]."
  4. The Ask: "Free for a 10-min chat?"

Example: "Big fan of RolePilot's new AI features. I previously scaled a similar NLP engine to 1M users at ChatTech. I'd love to help you optimize your inference costs in the next quarter. Open to a quick call?"

When to use it?

Use this for: Email applications, LinkedIn DMs, and startups. Avoid for: Government jobs, Academia, or companies asking for "detailed statements".
