The Golden Rule: Give Value First
Networking isn't about asking for a job. It's about building a relationship. If your first message is "Can you hire me?", you've already lost.
Script 1: Connecting with a Peer (The "Fellow Fan")
Use when: You admire someone's work or posts.
"Hi [Name], I've been following your posts on [Topic] for a while. Your recent breakdown of [Specific Point] was spot on. I'm also working in [Field] and would love to connect to see more of your insights."
Script 2: The Alumni Connection
Use when: You went to the same school or previous company.
"Hi [Name], fellow [University Name] grad here! I noticed you made the jump from [Major] to [Current Role]βthat's the exact path I'm hoping to take. Would love to connect."
Script 3: Reaching out to a Recruiter
Use when: You applied for a specific role.
"Hi [Name], I just applied for the [Role Name] position. I know you're busy, but I wanted to briefly introduce myself. I have X years of experience in [Skill 1] and [Skill 2], and I've built [Project] that solves exactly what this role needs. Looking forward to potentially connecting."
Script 4: The "Informational Interview" Ask
Use when: You want advice, not a job (yet).
"Hi [Name], I'm extremely impressed by your career path at [Company]. I'm currently exploring a pivot into [Industry] and would value your perspective on the biggest challenges the field is facing. Any chance you'd be open to a 10-minute coffee chat? No sales pitch, I promise."
Script 5: The Follow-Up
Use when: They accepted, but didn't reply.
"Thanks for connecting, [Name]! Looking forward to seeing your updates in my feed."
(Simple, low pressure. It keeps the door open.)
